Technology enabled precision manufacturing is one of the most important industry sectors in Massachusetts and in the Pioneer Valley Region. The precision manufacturing companies are small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) and are part of a supply chain primarily engaged in producing precision mechanical parts, components, and sub-assemblies utilizing high technology equipment, lean manufacturing, and world class technology development. In order to remain competitive, the sector needs to be innovative, ensure a technologically competent incumbent workforce, and develop a system to ensure a sustainable pipeline of new qualified employees.
Since September 2006, the Hampden County Workforce Board, has been the lead agency in managing and directing the Precision Manufacturing Regional Alliance Project (PMRAP) and now PMRAP/2.0. PMRAP/2.0 represents a broad regional partnership comprised of precision manufacturing companies, educational/training institutions, economic development agencies, and interested community stakeholders, and has conducted capacity building initiatives and implemented workforce development programs for the precision manufacturing sector in the Pioneer Valley Region.
